LYSOL/NSTA SCIENCE AND YOUR HEALTH CHALLENGE NSTA, in partnership with Lysol Brand, awards a plaque and $1,500 each to 50 K-6 public and private school teachers for inquiry-based classroom projects which the teachers have developed to engage students in health-related issues. Possible topics such as personal health and hygiene, food growing, food production, food consumption, or disease might be addressed by the projects. Entries are judged on criteria such as connection to national or state standards, techniques used to motivate students, project procedures, integration with other curricular areas, practical applications, and assessment methods. The purposes of the challenge are to stimulate student interest and participation in science at the elementary level and to provide teachers with recognition and professional development opportunities. The stipend may be used to purchase science materials for the classroom and to attend national or regional NSTA conventions. Visit www.nsta.org/Lysol
to learn more about the challenge and to download the 2003 program application.
NEW TAX LAW This is not a direct
source of funding, but rather a tax break that should be considered by
all K-12 teachers. An economic stimulus package intended to help
businesses following the September 11 terrorist attacks also allows teachers
to deduct for the 2003 and 2004 tax years up to $250 of your
own money used to purchase books, supplies, computer equipment, and other
classroom materials without meeting the usual percentage restrictions on
professional expenses.
