ATLAS OF SCIENCE LITERACY

The American Association for the Advancement of Science/Project 2061 website at www.rbs.org/ec.nsf/pages/2061TenQuestions asks "Do teachers at different grade levels work together to clarify what ideas will be learned when?"  They argue that continuity of learning is very important and that teachers must discuss learning goals for various grade levels so that students first learn simple ideas and then tackle more complex ones.  Assistance in understanding an answer to this question is provided by the Atlas of Science Literacy.  This book was released by the National Science Teachers Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Project 2061.  The book shows graphically the connections between key learning goals for K-12 students and how concepts that students learn in one grade build on ideas from earlier grades and provide a framework for concepts learned in later grades.

The book, which involved more than a decade of study by scientists and K-12 teachers, costs $49.95.  It can be obtained by requesting item #00-12S from AAAS Distribution Center, PO Box 521, Annapolis Junction, MD 20701 or by calling 800-222-7809, and by requesting NSTA stock #PA001X by calling 800-722-NSTA or by visiting the NSTA Science Store at www.nsta.org/store/.

MONKEY PATTERNS

A number of teachers have asked for the patterns of our monkeys which we use when discussing center of balance or center of gravity.  Recall that a pair of these monkeys are glued together back-to-back and a penny is glued between each pair of front paws or hands to prepare a monkey that will balance on his chin.
